“For more than 100 years, Maison Leleu has combined art, luxury and craftsmanship through the rigor of its design and the quality of its know-how in the exploration of precious materials… An aesthetic that cultivates sobriety, a luxury that asserts itself in the smallest details, a singular design that shines through in all of the creations.” – Maison Leleu site

Elegance Meets Craftsmanship

Synonymous with refinement, Maison Leleu was a pinnacle in the Art Deco movement. Founded and lead by Jules Leleu, the design house shaped the Art Deco moment in Paris and beyond through clean lines, impeccable craftsmanship, and impactful materials. Maison Leleu’s furniture and textiles became iconic in the history of interior design. Though not as well known as some contemporaries, the house produced for many years longer than other brands. More recently, it has reinstated itself as an important figure in recent years. At Jean-Marc Fray Antiques, we are drawn to the quality of the Leleu pieces which can pair perfectly with any style.

A Glimpse into Jules Leleu’s Legacy

Jules Leleu’s story began in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. This beautiful town on the northern coast of France is where he was born and began to study decorative painting. His family had a history in the decorative arts, full of artisans and decorators. He also studied architecture, though this was parlayed as World War I began. Leleu served as an aviator during the war. After the conflict, he returned to the decorative arts and crafted Maison Leleu into the design house we recognize today. He opened the first gallery for Maison Leleu in Paris in 1924.

In 1925, Leleu exhibited at the Exposition Industrielle et Arts Decoratifs, winning a grand prize. This was especially influential as the 1925 exposition gave us the term Art Deco originally. Additionally, due to this show the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York acquired a burled commode by Leleu and put the Maison Leleu name in the spotlight. In the 1930s and 1940s, Maison Leleu grew in importance and impact. Jules’ daughter created a textile department, crafting Art Deco rugs and fabrics that highlighted the sleek furniture designs. His two sons also were influential in the business, running the large projects and atelier.

Dedication to Art Deco Design

What truly sets Maison Leleu apart in the great names of Art Deco design is their unyielding devotion to quality. Each creation by Maison Leleu not only proudly showcases the spirit of the Art Deco movement but also has a timeless elegance. Each material is carefully selected and sourced. Jules Leleu’s designs emphasized exotic woods, intricate marquetry, inlaid ivory and lacquer, and simple lines. His connection to tradition never faltered as his children experimented and brought the house into the next era. As described by the current Maison Leleu, the pieces are “designed like works of art and full of history, each Leleu creation, as rare as it is essential, contributes to the refinement of the most elusive projects.” Maison Leleu was closed in the 1970’s, yet has recently been brought back to life by Jules’ great granddaughter.
