Lyon, City of Light

Lighting up 370 emblematic locations around the historic city of Lyon, the Fête des Lumières is an incredible showcase of architecture, art, and light!

The first church in Lyon dedicated to the Virgin Mary was builtin 1168. Since, Mary has been an emblem of the city. In 1643 the city councilors asked Mary to protect the city as the plague ravaged France. In exchange a pilgrimage was created throughout the city and has been taking place since. Though originally in September, due to events in 1852 it was postponed to December 8th. It has been held in December in preparation for the holidays since then. Now, every year on December 8th the city comes alive with light. Inhabitants place candles in their windows and the streets showcase exceptional light installations. Since 1999, the current version of the festival has taken place over four days.

Fête des Lumières 2024

Every year has a new theme. And in 2024, to celebrate 25 years of the 4-day festival, each different location will feature memories and lights from the past festival themes. With over 32 stops on the pilgrimage of light, the historic city lights up in a striking display.

At Jean-Marc Fray Antiques we are so inspired by lighting. Jean-Noel was able to share videos and photos of a few of the most incredible moments of the Fête des Lumières 2024. Please enjoy and reach out if we can help you bring color and life into your home through lighting!
