Our newest container of French and Italian furniture and lighting has arrived! With it, we received a striking collection of Murano glass lamps – specifically many pairs in the style of Ettore Sottsass. With bold colors and forms, these one-of-a-kind fixtures are sure to bring a playful touch to any space.

Born in Austria in 1917 and raised in Turin, Italy, Sottsass’ father was a Modernist architect. After working for his father and others, in 1947 he set up his own architecture and design firm in Milan, working in many mediums. All of his experiences early in his career influenced the later work he because so known for.

The Memphis Group

The Memphis Group was created one evening when Ettore Sottsass invited a group of young architects and designers together to discuss the future of design. Active from 1980 to 1987, the group designed ceramics, glass items, fabrics, furniture, lighting, and more. They were known for color and abstract, asymmetrical shapes. The pieces were not understood at the time, often thought of as a joke. Despite this, they designed many iconic non-conformist pieces of furniture, lighting, and everyday objects. It was important to them to create luxury, unexpected items made of simple materials.

After the Memphis Group was no longer active, their influence continued in the design world. From television shows, surfing and skating aesthetics and beyond, the bold qualities can be found.

Jean-Marc Fray & Ettore Sottsass Style

Characterized by bright colors, geometric shapes, and flat patterns, the Memphis aesthetic continues to influence many of the Murano glass lighting found within our gallery as well. Please enjoy a few of our favorite Ettore Sotssass style fixtures from our newest container!

Murano glass is known for their bright colors as well, historically having been the source of inventing many colors of hand-blown glass. These lamps showcase a few of the striking tones that are possible!

The scale and shape of the glass also lends itself to the Memphis style. Mixing curves and sharp angles, these pieces showcase both abstract design qualities of Sottsass and the craftsmanship of Murano glass.
