From strong architectural pieces to visionary, timeless craftsmanship, at Jean-Marc Fray Antiques we are always searching for inspiration. Instructing how we style and collect pieces, we love finding unexpected ways of using furniture and pairing items. As an iconic French designer, Jules Leleu’s Parisian villa featured in AD is a perfect example of impeccable styling, quality materials, and intricate detail.

Jules Leleu

Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, Jules Leleu’s family had a history in the decorative arts and he was surrounded by artisans and decorators from an early age. After World War I, Leleu began Maison Leleu and opened his first gallery in Paris in 1924. Synonymous with refinement, Maison Leleu was a pinnacle in the Art Deco movement. The design house shaped the Art Deco moment in Paris and beyond through clean lines, impeccable craftsmanship, and impactful materials. Maison Leleu’s furniture and textiles became iconic in the history of interior design. Though not as well known as some contemporaries, the house produced for many years longer than other brands. More recently, it has reinstated itself as an important brand.

Leleu’s Parisian Design

In 1942, Leleu was entrusted with the design of a villa on the outskirts of Paris with an incredible view of the city and the Eiffel tower. Well known as a fashionable decorator at the time, Leleu designed for many well known wealthy industrialists around the world. His design style was described at the time as “opulent simplicity.” No space is wasted, and this example of his work is no different.

He was known to surround himself with craftspeople who impeccably created furniture and lighting like artwork. From staircase railings to tile, each detail was specifically picked for the home. Workmanship, quality, color, and dynamic use of space make this home stand out today just as it would have back in 1942. Due to a loving heir, this space has been kept in perfect condition with no changes since its original design. A perfect looking glass into the Art Deco past!

At Jean-Marc Fray, we are especially inspired by the allure and sleek lines of the Art Deco period. Mixing undeniable craftsmanship with inspired artistic detailing, the simple yet bold styling brings out the most of each space and showcases quality design. Many of these moments can be replicated to create rooms that invite one to live with the opulent regality of Art Deco Paris. Please enjoy the beautiful Jean-Marc Fray Antiques vintage and antique pieces pieces that can perfectly bring the French style of Jules Leleu into your home.

The Jules Leleu Inspiration

Leleu’s dining spaces are often perfect examples of Art Deco design at its finest. In this villa, we are drawn to the extravagant proportions and quality wood furniture. This Art Deco buffet highlights the simple, yet striking, Deco lines with incredible wood craftsmanship. The detailing on the doors is even reminiscent of the ironwork banister in this home. The Art Deco style is a pastiche of many styles, all coming together in a desire for modernism. This table is a perfect example – while Empire in style, the curved details and strength lend it perfectly to this style. Finally, while Leleu’s dining room focuses on this elegant tapestry, we love the similarly large scale of this Art Deco period mirror. The artistic design by Luigi Brusotti would fit wonderfully within the villa, even bringing in the tones of green and gold found within the dining room.

Taking cue from the burgundy tones found throughout the home, these rich colors add drama and luxury to any space. In Leleu’s space this is found in the lacquered furniture and accessories. We love the modern touch of these Murano glass bottles that feature the similar burgundy tone. This gueridon showcases the classic Art Deco details found throughout the space as well. Many similar tables can be spotted in the living room and beyond. The wood is also expertly crafted with these curved details. Additionally, Art Deco seating can be found within the home, often showcasing curved lines and comfortable forms. This stool includes the Art Deco shape with lovely gold Deco detailing.

Inspired by the iron craftsmanship found in the banisters throughout the home, we love this brass Art Deco side table. The intricate metal work features classic Deco design. Similarly, this Art Deco urn lamp showcases this shape that can be located among Leleu’s rooms. Finally, within the home marble and bronze figure statues are often included. These bring history and character to the home. The quality and material are just one more example of his impeccable styling. Our bronze figure would fit perfectly within this space.

Many other space designed by Jules Leleu are also striking and peak examples of Art Deco design. Seen above is the French Embassy in Belgrade, designed by Jules Leleu and Jacque-Emile Ruhlmann. We love the iconic Deco relief work on the walls and fireplace. These Art Deco lion sculptures bring a similar style while on a scale fitting for a residential home. We also love the Deco brass and crystal sconces and chandelier shown in the embassy space. These Deco glass sconces emanate a similar style and elegance.
