History of Etruscan Style
Originating from the ancient Etruscan civilization in the area that is now central Italy, the Etruscan style was produced from approximately the 9th to the 3rd centuries BCE. Though heavily influenced by ancient Greek culture, the Etruscans created a look all their own and can be found in French and Italian furniture and architecture design through the eras.
At Jean-Marc Fray we are always drawn to the Etruscan details of reliefs on buffets, metal working, and terracotta figures. The Etruscans were master metal smiths. With abundant access to resources, they specialized in bronze works such as mirrors, jewelry, and small boxes. Their terracotta pottery was also traded widely. These were often sculptures and urns. Columns, reliefs, and large two dimensional wall art are also associated with Etruscan architecture. At our gallery, the Etruscan style pieces tend to include metal work depicting animal or human forms. They also include relief work showing two dimensional detailing of plants, waves, and ancient architectural forms. We also receive many terracotta sculptures, including those inspired by the ancient style of sculpture.

Adorned with the finest gilt bronze frieze of waves in the “à L’Etrusque” style, this piece emphasizes the quality and rich history that can be brought to a piece through the Etruscan style.
Bringing terracotta into a space adds a wonderful organic element. The Etruscan and Greek styles are often found in the terracotta sculptures and vessels we receive from Europe. With the strong ancient lines and superb focus on human form are especially pertinent.
