“Beauty is the harmony of function and form.” – Alvar Aalto, pioneer of modern architecture and furniture design
Often defined as practical use or purpose, designers typically regard function as separate from aesthetic appeal. With the design world constantly discussing style over function versus function above style, at Jean-Marc Fray Antiques we want both! The ultimate goal in design is to have beauty emphasize the purpose, and the purpose to not take away from the beauty. Whether furnishing a small space that requires utilitarian precision or a larger clean, sleek space, marrying aesthetics and reason is essential. While every item in our gallery serves a purpose, many have additional characteristics for supplemental use. Here are a few of our favorite pieces that showcase the perfect blend of form and function.
Mario Bellini Style Italian Sofa
The Camaleonda sofa system designed by Mario Bellini in 1970 is an excellent example of function and form. With moveable square sofa elements, the piece provides unlimited options and is dynamic in appearance. The sofa is a chameleon itself, able to be moved to create different shapes. The back and arm rests are also able to rearrange on alternative sides. Bellini was proud of this design, saying “Of all the objects I have designed, Camaleonda is perhaps the best in terms of its sense of freedom. It’s a piece of furniture with a secret and an extraordinary gift of longevity.” Our sofas are crafted in one of the ateliers in Meda, Italy where the original sofa was produced. They are made following the tradition and the craftsmanship inherited from decades of experience and “savoir-faire”.
Knoll Style French Mid-Century Folding Table
In the style of Knoll’s renowned conference table by Eames, this elegant table features a wood top that flips up for functionality. Perfect for a small office or a working space, this table gives high design when in use, while tucking away with ease when necessary. The chromed base is sturdy and gives the table a polished mid-century aesthetic. This is more than a conference table – it is durable, simple, and beautiful.
Eileen Gray’s E-1027 Table
Designed by Irish designer Eileen Gray, this iconic adjustable side table is originally from 1927. Created specifically for her E-1027 house in France, Table E-1027 is made of steel and glass. The table has since become one of Gray’s most famous designs. The table’s adjustable arm and light weight make it flexible in function. To raise and lower the arm, simply remove the clip which holds it in place. The sleek design is a testament to the modern eye of the designer working well before this modernist view was widespread.
French Louis XVI “Trictrac” Table
The mid-century ideals lend themselves to functional pieces, yet there are also many antique items that exert these same principles. This stunning trictrac table provides three surfaces for use! One side of the table has a wonderful leather writing surface for use as a desk. The opposite side of the top has green felt surface for card playing. What distinguishes this piece from many other game tables is the interior is a backgammon/trictrac board featuring rare ivory and tinted ivory inlays. Beauty meets form as this is a perfect showcase of the antique Louis XVI aesthetic while still providing multiple uses.
Louis XVI Style Antique Secretary and Scriban
A staple at the Jean-Marc Fray gallery and in French design is the secretary. Few pieces so simply combine form and function while also being available in almost any style or size you can imagine. At our gallery we typically source Louis XVI style pieces for the classic French detail and lustrous ebonized finish, creating a piece of furniture that can meld with any style. The secretary provides functional storage, while also serving as a writing/work surface. Our available scriban also employs pull out drawers for added benefit. Form and function at it’s best!
