Best of Design: Sconce Sale Edition

This summer we’re celebrating 30 remarkable years of business at Jean-Marc Fray Antiques!! For three decades, we have brought the best of French and Italian treasures to Texas and beyond. We could not be more grateful for all our customers on this journey. To celebrate, we are rolling out special pricing on our Murano glass items – currently our collection of superb sconces!

Ending on July 9th, here are a few of our favorite Murano sconces included in our 30th Anniversary sale and information on the techniques and designers that make them so sought after.

Murano Glass “Ganci” Orange Sconces

With dynamic levels of hand-blown glass, this excellent pair of sconces feature C shaped glass elements in a “ganci” or hook style. The bold orange colors of the glass draw the eye, while the battuto finish of the glass adds texture and movement. The modern design and the playful details of this pair make them especially exciting in any space! We are especially drawn to the creativity and energy of this orange tone. Full of cheerfulness and vibrancy, this color packs a punch. Adding pleasure and warmth, orange is known for exuding optimism. Perfect for a space used to socialize, we also recommend including pops of bright orange amidst a more neutral setting. While all of our sconces pair well with art, we love the idea of bringing out the drama in art by pairing these with modern art. Originally priced at $7200, while the sconces are currently on sale they are priced at $5040.

Murano Glass Silver Ginko Leaf Sconces

Delicate in design and bold in scale, these Murano glass silver Ginko leaf sconces are as elegant as they get! The subtle detail of the silver leaf on the hand-blown glass leaves is striking and beautiful. We love the artistic element of this pair – perfect for bringing a touch of nature into any room. The ginko leaf has long been a symbol of endurance and peace, with many representations of the unique shape throughout art, literature, and history. Found in fossils from over 200 million years ago, the legacy of the ginko continues. Pairing this shape with the hand-crafted glass from Murano with its own expansive history creates a lovely connection. Originally priced at $9200, while the sconces are currently on sale they are priced at $6900.

Curved “Bluino” Venini Sconces

Formed by curved, draping iconic triedri pieces of glass, these stunning sconces are a classic touch. Both delicate with a soft blue hue and modern with a chrome structure, this pair brings history and provenance to any space. Opened in 1921 by Paolo Venini, Venini & C. started as a glass factory on Murano island. It quickly became a leading figure in the production of Murano glass with inspiring designs. Venini collaborated with architects and designers such as Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Gae Aulenti, and more. Their mission was to take the traditions of Murano glass blowing and combine them with the French fashion industry. This Triedri design was first crafted in 1958 and consists of lighting using assembled elements of solid glass. Each piece is in the trihedron shape or prism, and reflects light in different and spectacular ways. Originally priced at $4600, while the sconces are currently on sale they are priced at $3220.

Murano Glass Stilnovo Sconces

Unlike some of the more ethereal pieces above, this pair of Stilnovo style sconces are grounded in their proportions and drama. With black lacquered brass and shiny brass elements, each creates quite an effect. The incamiciato glass is hand-blown using a technique of layered colors creating an opaque amber appearance. These globes glow with warmth and drama. Stilnovo was started in 1946 and has been a leading voice in Italian lighting design since. Of the highest quality, each piece takes modernist style to the next level. Originally priced at $5900, while the sconces are currently on sale they are priced at $4130.
